Whether you're preparing for emergencies, cutting back on bottled water, or just want an easy, reliable way to purify your tap water — Berkey has you covered. It's an affordable and convenient solution that gives you clean, safe drinking water in all kinds of situations.

Once you have taken the leap and purchased your Berkey, it’s essential to understand how to set it up correctly, use it properly, and keep it working efficiently before you fill it up with water.

This simple tutorial offers step-by-step instructions on how to set up, operate, and maintain your Berkey filter to ensure you get optimal use and water quality from your system.

In this article, you'll learn:

Let’s get started!

How to Set Up Your Berkey Water Filter

Setting up your Berkey system is relatively straightforward, but taking the time to do it correctly the first time around will ensure that your system performs optimally from the start. Here’s how to do it, step by step:

  1. Unbox and Inspect the Filter— Start by unpacking your Berkey system, ensuring you have all the components at hand:
  2. Clean the Components — Before assembling your system, wash the chambers, lid, and spigot with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  3. Prime the Filters — This is one of the most crucial steps and often where first-time users get tripped up. Black Berkey filters need to be primed—this means saturating them with water to force out any air or dust so they can start filtering effectively. Follow the steps below to prime your filters:

    • Attach the rubber priming button to the filter stem.

    • Hold it against your faucet while slowly turning on the cold water.

    • Let the water flow through the filter for about 20 seconds or until water starts seeping through the sides of the filter and water beads form on the surface. Repeat for each filter.

  4. Install the Filters

    • Place a washer on each filter stem, insert them into the holes of the upper chamber, and secure from the underside with a wingnut.

    • If using fluoride filters, screw them onto the bottom of the Black Berkey elements now.

  5. Install the Spigot — Insert the spigot into the hole in the lower chamber and hand-tighten using the washers and wingnut included to seal it snugly.

  6. Assemble the System — Stack the upper chamber (with filters installed) onto the lower chamber. Place the lid on top, and you're ready to fill it up and start using your Berkey!

How to Use Your Berkey

Once you have assembled your system, using your Berkey is refreshingly simple. Just follow the steps below.

  1. Fill the Upper Chamber: Lift the lid and pour water into the upper chamber. Gravity pulls the water through the Black Berkey elements into the lower chamber, where it is stored and ready for drinking.

  2. Dispense and Enjoy: Use the spigot on the lower chamber to pour filtered water. That’s it—no electricity, plumbing, or complicated controls required.

  3. Refill: When water levels in the lower chamber become low, it’s time to top up. Wait for the water to percolate through the filters to the lower chamber, where it can be tapped off as needed.

Tips for Everyday Use

The following tips will help you get the most from your system:

  • Refill the system regularly. Don’t wait until the lower chamber is empty. Just make sure you decant any remaining water to prevent the system from overflowing.

  • Avoid overfilling the top chamber when the bottom is already partially full—this can lead to overflow. Either partially fill the upper chamber or decant any remaining water from the lower chamber into a water bottle, jug, or beverage dispenser to ensure there is enough room for the next batch. Stack the upper chamber back on top of the lower chamber, then fill it up.

  • If you’re going to be away for a few days, empty the chambers to avoid coming home to stale water.

Recommended Berkey Filter Maintenance Schedule

Berkey filters are built to last, but like all good tools, they perform best when properly maintained. Here’s a brief overview of how to keep your system performing optimally:

  • Black Berkey elements should be cleaned every 2–4 months (or sooner if water flow slows down).

  • Stainless steel chambers and spigots should be washed with mild soap and water as needed.

  • Fluoride filters (if used) should be replaced every 1,000 gallons or annually, whichever comes first.
