Berkey® water filters are renowned for their ability to deliver clean, safe drinking water. However, when not in use, proper storage is essential to maintain their efficiency and longevity.

Whether you're going on vacation or taking a break from using your Berkey® system, following the right steps ensures your filters remain in top condition for future use.

From this article, you’ll learn:

Why Proper Storage Matters?

Because the effectiveness and lifespan of your Berkey filters can decrease if they are not stored properly. Moisture, contaminant exposure, or incorrect handling can damage the filters, compromising their performance.

In case you won't be using your system for a while, we advise you to remove the filters and clean your Berkey system together with them. Then, store it away for later use.

The procedure depends on how long you plan to leave your filter idle. That’s why we’ve prepared tips for every situation, starting with...

Short-term Storage: Weekend Trips (up to three days)

If you are only going to be away for a few days, you do not have to store your filters. Your Berkey water filter will survive just fine as it is on the countertop without you. Just head off and enjoy your weekend break.

Of course, you could also take your system along with you to ensure you have access to clean, safe water on tap at all times.

How to Store Berkey Filters When on Vacation (trips lasting about a week up to a month)

If you are going on vacation and will be away for 1-4 weeks, your Black Berkey filters can be stored wet for up to a month inside a large ziplock bag or plastic container in the refrigerator door.

The filters still contain water, so it is essential that they do not freeze, as this will cause the water inside the pores to expand and damage the filter media, compromising the filtration ability.

When you return from your travels, simply reassemble your Berkey system and fill it with water, and it is ready to use.

How to Store Black Berkey Filters Long-Term (months to years)

Unlike PF-2 fluoride and arsenic filters, which are more time-sensitive and should be replaced if not used within two weeks, Black Berkey filters can last indefinitely if stored properly.

If you plan on storing Black Berkey filters for over a month, follow this step-by-step guide below for tips on long-term storage:

  1. Clean the Filters Thoroughly: Before storing, it’s crucial to clean your Black Berkey filter elements to remove any contaminants and prevent bacterial growth. Scrub them gently with a Scotch-Brite pad or stiff brush under running water. Avoid using soapy water, as it can clog the micropores.
  2. Dry the Filters Completely: After cleaning your Black Berkey filters, allow the filter elements to air-dry for at least 24-48 hours (preferably 3-5 days) in a cool, well-ventilated area to ensure they are bone-dry before storing. Any moisture in the filter pores can lead to mold, mildew, and bacterial growth developing.
  3. Use the Correct Storage Materials: Once the Black Berkey filters are dry, store them in a clean, airtight environment to ensure protection from dust, debris, and airborne contaminants. Use plastic ziplock bags or airtight containers, and label them with the storage date.
  4. Choose the Right Storage Environment: Temperature and humidity levels matter when storing your filters. Keep filters in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or extreme heat. Avoid damp areas like basements or unventilated storage spaces.
  5. Re-prime the Filters Before Reuse: When the time comes to use your system again, re-prime the filter elements by flushing them according to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure optimal performance.
  6. Inspect Before Use: Always check stored filters for cracks, strong odors, or visible damage before reinstalling them into your system.

How to Store Berkey Fluoride Filters

The maximum timeframe for storing Berkey PF-2™ filters is two weeks. If left longer than this, they should be discarded as they will dry out, potentially allowing bacteria to colonize the media.

Follow the steps outlined below to prevent the Berkey PF-2 fluoride and arsenic filters from drying out when stored, and to ensure they continue to function optimally when reinserted back into your Berkey filtration system:

  1. Flush the fluoride filters with clean water to remove residue, but do not use abrasive materials.
  2. Check if all water has been drained from the filters. Please note that, unlike Black Berkey filter elements, fluoride filters must not be allowed to dry out completely. Do not air dry the filters, as this could allow bacteria to contaminate the filter media. The filters should be discarded if not used within two weeks.
  3. If you plan on reusing the Berkey PF-2 filters within two weeks, place them in a clean, sealed bag or container and store them in the refrigerator to prevent the process of drying out.
  4. Prime the filters by rinsing them thoroughly under running water before reinserting them into your Berkey system.
  5. If you haven’t used your fluoride filters after two weeks and want to store them longer, you can re-prime them and put them back in the fridge for another two weeks. For long-term storage, you can repeat this process every two weeks until you need to use them again to prevent them from drying out in the interim.

Keep Your Berkey Filters in Top Shape with Proper Storage

Proper storage of your Berkey filters is a simple but crucial step in ensuring their longevity and effectiveness. By taking the time to clean, dry, and store them correctly, you protect your investment and guarantee access to clean, safe water whenever you need it.

With these tips, your Berkey system will continue to perform optimally, providing you with clean, safe drinking water for many years to come!
